  • On-site
    • Scotts Valley, California, United States
  • Electrical Engineering

Job description

Zero Motorcycles is the leading electric motorcycle and powertrain brand. We combine the ingenuity of a Silicon Valley start-up with the grit and craftsmanship involved in motorcycle manufacturing to develop the world’s best electric motorcycles. We are searching for an experienced battery systems expert to join our Engineering team. The individual we are looking for must have a deep understanding of current and emerging battery technology with an emphasis on the electric vehicle market. They should understand design parameters of lithium-ion batteries as well as what is most important for a given application and use profile. This person also needs to understand the design criteria that need careful consideration for the integration of battery technologies into battery modules, systems, and equipment that is exposed to the elements. They will also guide the effort to integrate these solutions into our battery systems, test that they meet specified design criteria, and move them through the design methodology to production.

This position is full-time at our Scotts Valley, California headquarters and will report to the HV Battery Systems Manager.

Job requirements

  • Develop battery requirements, design budgets, perform simulations/analysis, and execute DFMEA to ensure the battery design meets system requirements.

  • Work with Electrical Engineers, Firmware Engineers, Mechanical Engineers, Powertrain Engineers and management to understand the impact of battery pack requirements on system performance, as well as provide technical guidance to ensure the battery design meets system requirements.

  • Develop DVP&R plans; conduct testing to ensure that the design criteria has been realized in completed design.

  • Write specifications, coordinate design of the battery components, prove feasibility through early testing, confirm full functionality and durability of the representative design, and assist manufacturing engineering with production build validation.

  • Work with the test group on cell/pack testing by writing clear and concise test specifications/procedures, assist with setting up the tests as needed, and evaluate/report test results.

  • BS Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering or equivalent technical Degree; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Eight or more years’ experience in product development environment, and five or more of those years on battery systems

  • Experience with Li-Ion battery chemistries, cell design, cell performance characterizations, pack integration, pack durability, and pack weatherproofing

  • Automotive, EV, HEV, experience a strong plus

Skills and Attributes:

  • Proven working experience in battery pack design and development

  • Experienced in DFMEA, DVP&R, and failure analysis • Experience in writing clear, concise and comprehensive test plans, test cases, and test reports.

  • Experience and knowledge of all tools used to verify battery cells and pack assemblies

  • Experience working with outside vendors

  • Skilled in CAD and specifically with Solidworks a plus
