Zero Motorcycles is seeking an experienced Contract Systems Engineer to join our Electrical Engineering Department for a critical 6-month engagement. You'll be stepping into an active project mid-development cycle, taking ownership of testing, validation, and design refinement activities for our electrical and battery systems integration.

Position Summary

We need a seasoned engineer who can quickly integrate into an ongoing project and drive it through the testing and validation phase. You'll inherit existing designs and requirements, then focus intensively on proving performance, identifying gaps, and refining solutions to meet specifications. This role requires someone who can work independently, make rapid technical decisions, and thoroughly document all work for seamless knowledge transfer to permanent team members. You will be working within a team in Scotts Valley CA, with a Partner in this project located in India, an offshore team located in India and vendors worldwide but primarily in Asia Territories.

Key Responsibilities

Testing & Validation Focus:

  • Take ownership of existing DVP&R plans and execute comprehensive testing protocols

  • Conduct rigorous testing of electrical systems and battery pack assemblies

  • Analyze test results, identify failure modes, and recommend corrective actions

  • Validate designs against established requirements and specifications

  • Perform and update DFMEA based on testing discoveries and design evolution

Design Refinement & Problem Solving:

  • React quickly to testing discoveries and implement design modifications

  • Work with existing vendor relationships to qualify alternative components as needed

  • Troubleshoot system integration issues and embedded software interactions

  • Balance technical solutions with cost and timing constraints within existing project framework

  • Refine battery pack architecture based on testing feedback and performance data

Documentation & Knowledge Transfer:

  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of all testing procedures, results, and design changes

  • Create detailed technical reports and design rationale documents

  • Prepare thorough knowledge transfer materials for incoming permanent team members

  • Document vendor relationships, component specifications, and design decision history

  • Establish clear handoff protocols for ongoing project support

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent

  • 8+ years experience in product development with ability to jump into mid-stage projects

  • 5+ years hands-on experience with Li-Ion battery systems and electrical integration

  • Proven track record with DFMEA development and execution

  • Strong experience in DVP&R planning and test execution

  • EV/HEV experience required; automotive development processes essential

  • Exceptional troubleshooting skills and ability to work independently

  • Outstanding documentation and technical writing abilities

  • Experience with knowledge transfer and project handoffs

Contract Details

Duration: 6 months with potential for extension based on project needs
Location: Onsite at Scotts Valley, California headquarters
Travel: ~15% domestic and international as project requires
Start Date: Immediate availability preferred

Physical Requirements

  • Navigate lab environments and operate technical testing equipment

  • Lift up to 50 pounds (battery packs and test equipment)

  • Extended periods of detailed technical work and documentation
